We the Community
One of the most important resources in any school is its parents and community volunteers. We are fortunate to have a very involved community at Canyon School. Each of our community members brings special talents and fresh new ideas to help make our school a better place where our children can thrive.
Volunteering Inside the School
The cooperation and teamwork of the staff and parent volunteers at Canyon School provide children with an exceptional learning environment. Please let your child’s teacher know how you are interested in helping with classroom-related activities. Please keep in mind that a volunteer in the classroom is an aide to the teacher, who is in charge of the curriculum and students. The follow are example of ways you can help:
- Lead a cultural background activity/share you cultural background: Chinese New Year calligraphy writing, St. Nicholas Day lanterns, Moroccan henna designs, Kwanza songs, etc.
- Prepare art materials: Make copies, cut up diagrams, and assemble materials for the teacher
- Share your knowledge, skills, and interests: All About My Job, Raising Rabbits, Let’s Make a Game Board, Training Puppies
- Help with field trips: Contact the room parent to suggest or plan an outing and volunteer to drive the kids
- Assemble homework or special project packages
Volunteering Outside the Classroom
There are many ways in which you can be involved at the school outside of the classroom. These options work well for those who can’t volunteer during regular school hours. Please watch for requests for help throughout the year. The following are examples of ways you can help:
- Serve as Room Parent for your child’s class
- Help design and produce Canyon School Tee-Shirts
- Lend a helping hand on “Site Improvement” work days
- Help maintain the school websites
- Organize food and babysitting for CATSS meetings
- Help sew costumes and paint decorations for the school plays
Fundraising Activities
Because Canyon School is a free, public school, it depends on support from its extended community to help cover costs that the State no longer pays for–and that’s where you can help. The following is a sampling of Canyon Association to Support the School (CATSS) current fundraising activities. CATSS meetings are open to all parents, so please attend if you are interested in planning any of these events. If you are unable to attend meetings, there are plenty of opportunities to help with events throughout the year. Please watch for sign-up sheets throughout the school year to volunteer to chair and/or participate in these important events.
- Pancake Breakfasts (throughout the school year)
- Halloween Carnival (October)
- Book Faire (TBD each school year)
- Arts & Crafts Faire (December)
- Spring Auction (springtime—date TBD each school year)
- White Elephant Sales (fall and spring)
- Other (based on parent creativity)
All Suggestions are Welcome!
The above volunteer opportunities are only a beginning to what we can accomplish. Please feel free to make suggestions to any member of the Executive Committee |
